Index Rules

How the Healthcare Index Works

The Healthcare Index is built on trust, privacy and transparency. Every workplace is scored using the same rules to help ensure the Index provides a credible picture of healthcare workers’ experiences.

1. Every score is verified

Only scores submitted by verified healthcare workers count toward a workplace’s results.

SEIU Healthcare members must verify their submission and job at a workplace using their Member ID, and a member of our team will complete a thorough review before a score is published.

The identity and individual scores are always kept confidential and will never be displayed publicly or shared with an employer.

2. Everyone uses the same scoring system

Workers score their workplace from 1-5 stars across the same workplace categories.

★ = Poor
★★★★★ = Excellent

Using the same framework and scoring system across workplaces allows us to build consistent and meaningful workplace scores.

3. Only verified scores count

Every submission is reviewed before being included in the Index.

Verified scores are combined with scores from other workers at the same workplace to calculate individual category scores and an overall workplace score.

4. Participation matters

The more workers who participate, the stronger the picture becomes.

Workplaces must meet a minimum participation threshold before their results can be used for public benchmarking and comparisons. This helps reduce the impact of small samples and individual outliers.

5. The same rules apply to every workplace

Every workplace is measured using the same scoring, verification and calculation rules.

Employers cannot pay to improve their score, remove verified worker scores or influence how their results are calculated.

6. Scores will grow with the Index

Workplace scores aren’t permanent grades. They reflect the experiences shared by verified workers and will evolve as more workers participate.

Once we establish a strong baseline of scores, the Healthcare Index will also allow workers to compare their workplace with the Retirement Home sector and other workplaces.

7. The Index will be refreshed

Each worker can submit one score for their workplace per Index cycle. Once your score has been verified and submitted, you will not be able to submit another score for that cycle.

The Healthcare Index will be refreshed each year, giving workers a new opportunity to score their workplace and giving workplaces an opportunity to improve and have that improvement reflected in their score.

This also helps protect the integrity of the Index by ensuring each verified worker has one voice and one score during each scoring period.
